Newborn baby pictures are adorable. But, when you’re expecting a baby, it seems like you have enough on your mind without even thinking about baby pictures right after the birth. Babies grow up and change so fast, so time is of the essence. The photo shoot should be done within two weeks of the birth, so being prepared (and getting your other half involved in the process) can cut down on things on your worry list. Here are some tips to get you prepared for your newborn’s photo shoot. You’ll be glad you took they time to capture all their precious details while they are still little.

Budget

Decide on what you want to spend on your baby pictures and shop around for photographers. A lot of the cost depends on what kind of shoot you want, and what props will be needed. The clearer the idea the better, so read on for more tips!

Choose theme and tone

What sort of photos are you going for? Do you want the photo to look artistic or cute or even funny? You don’t have to stick to a super serious photo if that’s not your style. Pick out colors that you like, and what materials you think will look best. Once you have decided, let your photographer know. It’s as easy as that!

Who will be in the shot?

Newborn baby pictures don’t have to just be about the baby – you can include family members. From newborn and mother, to newborn with parents, and even newborn and sibling, you can create some great shots of the whole family, and a snapshot to remember.

Who and what are the photos for?

How many different shots do you need? What size? Are they purely for your home or will you be handing them out to family members? Do you want a small copy for your wallet? All details you need to consider.

Outfits

Choose out some comfy clothing for your little cherub – nothing too tight or difficult to remove. More likely, your little one will be in their birthday suit, so just something for the journey down there is enough. Maybe you want to add an accessory like a hat or pair of socks. Bring a couple of different options. If other family members are participating, choose simple, plain clothing that is in keeping with your color theme.

Diet

The baby’s temperament is paramount to a good photo, so make sure they are happy and relaxed. If your baby is breast-fed, then make sure they are not consuming any spicy or unsettling food through the milk. An upset stomach can make your baby uncomfortable and fidgety.

Full belly and sleepy eyes

The best shots are of curled up sleeping babies, so make sure your little one is ready to rest. Keep them alert and active and feed them well just before the shoot.

Supplies

A pacifier is obviously an essential to take with you. Since you are leaving the house, take all the things you would normally take with you, and make sure you have spares of things like clothes, hats, socks, and diapers. It is a baby, after all!

Circumcision

If you’re having a boy and are getting him circumcised, make sure this is at least five days after the shoot. Circumcision in a newborn baby can mean many of the poses are uncomfortable for him as he will still be healing.

Communicate with your photographer

Possibly the most important one! No birth is set in stone, so make sure you are able to get in touch with your photographer when the day arrives. If you know you will forget on baby pictures day (forgivable!) then assign the task to a family member, or your other half. The more notice the photographer gets, the better. Once you’ve agreed on a date, it’s a good idea to confirm a couple of days beforehand and make sure you have a list of everything you need to bring.
